In 1953 Len Engelsman immigrated to Canada from Spui, a small town in southern Holland. He stayed with friends in Weston Ontario and worked several jobs to make his way in an unfamiliar country. Len met and married Grace Bruinwood and made Thornhill his home.
In 1960 Len became a small engine mechanic apprentice for Katola’s Small Engines. Eventually the owners of Katola decided to shut down, but Len knew that Thornhill was a growing community that needed a small engine shop.
In 1966 Len borrowed $450, which he used to start Thornhill Lawn Equipment. Len worked hard to build a name for himself as Thornhill's go to guy for the sale and repair of outdoor power equipment. Unfortunately Len passed away in 1990. Today, Eric and John, Len's sons run the family business at 385 John Street and are proud to carry out Len's dream. Len's grand sons Aaron, BJ and Austin also are employed as well as long time loyal employee Julio and John. Cheryl, John's wife handles the book keeping while Eric's wife Teresa works as an office assistant making this a true family business.
